Not that it was a rainy day, but there’s nothing like finding a batch of cookie dough balls in the freezer ready to throw in the oven. mmMMMmmm hot cookies. :)

Aliens!

Sep 27
2008

These crazy looking guys are enoki mushrooms.

Their appearance weirded me out for a while. Fungi has always been one of those things I’ve been .. well, just unsure about. I’ve been of two minds about the .. um, life in them.. aakk how to explain this…

*paces the room*

Fungi are not fruit, nor vegetable. They are closer to animal. I don’t eat animals. They make me question what I’m eating, but oh man I love eating them. Are they sentient? Are they “alive”? What ARE they?!

Mushrooms have been described as the “meat for vegetarians”, but.. well there’s my issue. Can I be a vegetarian & still eat mushrooms? Are they just a misunderstood life-form? Are we torturing a being just because we can’t hear it scream or we don’t understand where its brain is? Do I watch too much Star Trek?

The look of enoki in particular make me question this life-form even more. They look alive…

& I sauteed them up in a little garlic & salt & ate them by the forkful.

Nature therapy

Just in case I sounded negative about driving & having a car in the title of my last post I thought I’d follow it with something undoubtedly positive today. ;)

We went to Mt Charleston on a whim yesterday afternoon. It’s only a short drive (if you don’t miss the turn-off like we did) from here in Vegas & hard to believe that such varying landscape & climate is only an hour or so away.

Vegas, if you haven’t been, is hot & dry & flat. We drove up the mountain, up to about 8000 ft altitude & stepped out of the car. The cool air hit us hard, it was crisp & the silence was deafening.. apart from a woodpecker going hard on the tree above us. Yes, trees! We were surrounded by beautiful lush pine trees! And green grass! It was amazing. The temperature was like 20 degrees cooler up there. Perfect. :)

So, we got our car a couple of days ago, meaning we’re able to explore town a little easier now.

Last night we headed downtown to Fremont St, a giant indoor street with an amazing roof of lights & crazy-loud sound system.
