The simple things

Dec 08
2008

So, if you haven’t guessed by now I’m really into the simple foods. I tire of reading snobby food blogs about rare truffle oils & saffron (saffron is highly over-rated in my opinion).

I really appreciate the beauty in simple foods. It’s about perfecting the basics & tweaking them everyday to get them perfect. Yes, a 20c breakfast can be beautiful & delicious.

There are no doubt a few exceptions to my simplicity rule… I have a fascination with exotic mushrooms ..that I’m having trouble quenching at the moment so I just read about them instead. There’s a burst of food blogs this fall talking about the joys of mushroom picking. The idea of walking through the woods searching for mushrooms has a certain romantic air that makes me want to get a basket & go foraging. ..Shame I’ve just moved to one of the driest areas of the US… If only I had a cacti or prickly pear fascination.

..Rambling.

Spices are ingredients I can never bore of but they’re not rare or exotic exactly. The possibilities are endless with spices. I could never be a locavore simply due to my spice-addiction, but my favourites are available to buy in every town, only $2 a jar. There’s nothing exclusive or snobbish about them.

I’ll never bore of vegetables. I love trying new varieties when we arrive in new territory. This week I picked up a purple cauliflower. It’s nothing exotic, just ol’ cauliflower, but I think it’s beautiful. I decided to put it in a curry (It’s gotta have a lot of flavour to get my husband to try it) & I was so impressed at the colours passing before me on my chopping board.

So for your viewing pleasure, I bring you .. vegetables. Simple, beautiful vegetables.

Look at those colours!

Made a damn fine curry too. See my post here for the curry sauce recipe. I also added some ground cashews this time that really rounded it off nicely.
